Content vs Content: What You Consume Can Consume You

What You Consume Shapes How You Feel

I did something many years ago that I think everyone should do at least once.

I went through my entire social media feed and deleted or unfollowed anything that triggered negativity, stress, or frustration, even if I did not consciously realize it was affecting me.

Let me explain.

We spend hours consuming content, scrolling social media, reading articles, watching videos, and listening to conversations. Then there is contentment, that feeling of peace, satisfaction, and happiness.

And here is the thing. Sometimes the content you consume is the very thing pulling you further away from being content.

Here Are the Two Meanings of Content for This Blog

Content is what you watch, read, and consume every day.
Content is the feeling of being at peace.

The two are connected in ways most people do not realize.

How This Plays Out Without You Even Noticing

It is subtle but it happens.

You see someone’s holiday post. Nothing in your life has changed yet suddenly you feel like you are missing out.

You watch a breaking news story designed for engagement rather than insight. Ten minutes ago you were fine. Now you are carrying stress about something far outside your control.

You scroll past highlight reels of people succeeding in business, fitness, and life. Instead of feeling motivated you feel like you are behind.

This is not about good or bad content. It is about knowing how it is affecting you personally.

What I Did to Fix It

I took control of my feeds. I unfollowed, muted, and unsubscribed. I removed news sources that focus on negativity rather than insight. I let go of the voices that only complain and criticize. I filtered out content that made me compare rather than feel inspired.

At the same time, I made a decision to engage with content that adds to my life. I started following accounts and reading articles that challenge my thinking and push me forward. I began paying more attention to people who share what they love, whether it is fitness, travel, creativity, or personal progress. I became more intentional about interacting with posts that genuinely make me want to like and comment, because I enjoy seeing people succeed.

Once I made these changes, I was not just consuming better content, I felt better. I had more focus, less distraction, and more space to build what actually matters.

The Hidden Power of Intentional Consumption

Most of us do not realize how much content we consume without thinking. Just like food, what you put in determines how you feel.

So here is something to try.

Next time you are scrolling, pause and ask yourself if this is building you or draining you. Think about whether what you are watching, reading, or listening to is adding value to your life or just filling time. Ask yourself whether you are consuming it out of habit or because it actually fuels you.

NB: A lot of content is designed to keep you scrolling for hours. Not because it adds value, but because it is built to hold your attention. If you want to achieve more in life, be aware of the difference between content that moves you forward and content that just keeps you occupied. You don’t want to look back one day and realize you spent thousands of hours watching funny videos and cat memes instead of building something meaningful.

What you consume is shaping you. How you feel determines how you show up in your life.

Choose wisely.
